With the cost of living rising—gas, groceries, rent—every month, without income hits harder.
That’s why getting—and keeping—your disability benefits matters.
But here’s the hard truth:
Many people who should qualify still get denied.
Not because they aren’t sick.
Because their medical records don’t clearly show their limitations.
Not their condition.
Their limitations.
We recently spoke with Attorney James Mitchell Brown, who has over 52 years of experience in Social Security Disability.
His message was direct:
“Social Security is not deciding if you’re sick.
They’re deciding if you can work full-time, consistently.”
And that decision comes down to what’s written in your medical records.
What Social Security Needs to See
Your records must clearly show what you cannot do in a workday, including:
- How long you can sit before needing to change position
- How long you can stand or walk before needing rest
- How much weight you can safely lift or carry
- How often you need breaks or time off-task
- How your condition affects focus, pace, and reliability
If this is not clearly documented, Social Security will assume you can still work—and deny your case.
This is one of the most common reasons claims fail.
If You’re NOT Approved Yet
This is your biggest opportunity to fix your case.
Before your next decision:
- Make sure your doctor is documenting your actual limits
- Do not say “I’m okay” or “I’m fine” at appointments
- Explain what you cannot do on a daily basis
- Ask about a Medical Source Statement (this can make or break your case)
If You ARE Already Approved
This still matters.
If your records don’t reflect your true limitations:
- You risk problems during a Continuing Disability Review (CDR)
- You may miss opportunities to protect or increase your benefits
Your Next Step (Do This Now)
Review your most recent doctor visit.
Ask yourself:
Did my doctor write down what I cannot do?
If not, that is where your case is weak.
