Child cases have significantly different approval criteria than adult cases.   Whereas adults typically have to prove that they can not do any job in the united states 5 days a week 40 hours a week and have medical evidence to support it children under 18 have to proof that their impairments limit their normal daily activity.

Your child may qualify if their disability prevents them being able to do at least 2 of the 5 activities below and your assets are below $2000 single or $3000 family.

1-  Acquiring and using information
2-  Attending and completing tasks
3 – Interacting and relating to others
4 – Caring for self
5 – Health and physical well being

This is a very preliminary basic benchmark test to help you understand if your child may qualify and there is much more involved in getting approved.  For example the experts say that to win you will have to prove that your child meets the social security listing criteria and consistent treatment is important ingredient because SSA wants to see that even with treatment the condition is debilitating.

If you believe your child qualifies you can get started by filing an application directly with Social Security Administration (SSA) or with a SSA Disability representative.  In my opinion you can be successful filling and application directly with Social Security as long as you

> are educated about the application process,
> understand how to complete the Child SSI forms,
> can verbally express your child’s disability to Social Security,

If you are not proficient in these areas than using a representative would increase your odds of winning.  To maximize your chances of winning I advocate that you interview a really good Social Security representative about your child’s case before you decide which way to file.
