Good news for disability recipients the amount of money you can make and still keep your benefits is automatically increasing in 2009.

The amount of money you can earn and keep your benefits in social security lingo is considered substantial gainful activity (SGA) and the SGA is going up.    Your specific SGA depends on the nature of your disabilityand typically is for non-blind disabled for $940.00.  In 2009 this will increase to $980.00.    For blind disabled the SGA amount for 2008 is $1570.00 and will be increasing to $1640 in 2009.

These amounts are net of impairment-related work expenses and to be eligible for disability benefits, a person must be unable to engage in substantial gainful so the SGA amount of applies for those that are have applied and are not yet approved.

In addition to this earlier this year SSA announced an across the board cost of living increase of about $60.00 for every $1,000 in monthly benefits.  If your SSDI check is $1000 and you combine both increases you’ll have $100.00 more coming your way in 2009.
