Long Term Disability (LTD) company Unum got busted recently for forcing social security disability applicants to falsely say that they were disabled and were not.

Granted in my opinion it was as small scale offense but guilty is guilty.  If you have a Long Term Disability Policy and especially if you are collecting LTD payment and have been asked to file for social security disability understanding you could be a victim of LTD companies financial motives and how to avoid it could save you time and money.

In my opinion here is is can sum up in one word why companies like Unum ask policy holders to file for social security  disability knowing they don’t qualify for their strict standards of disability. … MONEY. shocking huh!

The insurance companies like Unum are In bed with the feds on these policies.  Here’s how it works.

If a long term disability company like Unum is paying on a policy for $1500 per month and the policy holder like you gets a social security disability check for $1200.00 per month.  Unum only has to pay the difference between the two policies (make up the difference).  As soon as the LTD policy holder is approved for social security disability.

This to me is ludicrous because it creates an breading ground for greedy unethical business tactics for insurance companies to force applicants to file.

The other pitfall is the standards for social security disability are much more stringent than LTD.  What could happen is your approved for LTD and forced to apply social security disability and don’t qualifying.

This denial by social security would be ok if the LTD company kept paying on their policy but they have become notorious for scrutinizing, reviewing and eventually denying policy payments. The result if these situation is out of work and out of money …. no good…

Here is 2 easy tips to protect your self
