3 Steps To Home Share Success

1. HomeShare Housing Options

A. You move into a house

There is an increased population of seniors who love their house, often have family and friends in the area who they don't want to move away from.

These homeowners are looking for someone to assist with household tasks and to pay a reduced rent in exchange for housing. You could provide a range of services, including.

-> providing companionship and creating a protective presence

-> non-medical personal care (such as bathing, dressing, or walking)

-> socialization, discussing current events, board and card games

-> driving to appointments, preparing and or cooking meals

-> light housekeeping, such as laundry, dusting, and vacuuming

-> medication reminders

-> pet care

-> trash removal

-> scheduling and managing appointments

B. A housemate moves in with you:

This is most common.  An example is that you have a home and you get a housemate to offset expenses and possibly to help you with some of the items listed above.  This is a way for you to get income and keep your home.

2. How to find your home or share your home

A. Do it yourself.. Market yourself via Craigslist, Facebook, etc., know what you can afford, and make an offer.

Place or respond to ads like this from Craigslist ads to find a home:

Live In Care Giver - Live Rent Free

I am looking for a live-in caregiver for my wife. She is 56 years old and was diagnosed with Alzheimer's three years ago. Looking for someone to be her big sister who will help her out when she becomes confused. Must not get upset when you are asked the same question three times over the last 30 minutes. Someone who is patient, caring and understanding of the changes she will be going through as the disease progresses. We are non-smokers and non-drug users and expect the same of any applicants.

Thanks for your time.

B. Use a professional matching service:

It's easy, safe, and usually costs less than $50.00. The better run organizations usually provide:

Matching service screening, background checks, introductions, continued contact.

3. Homeshare get-started tools

A. National Shared Housing - Directory for Shared Housing programs in the USA.

B. HomeShare Vermont

Review there website to learn how the services work (the screening and matching service, background check, introduction, continued contact, and fees). http://homesharevermont.org

C. Do a Google Search with the words "home share" and your area.  Example home share service in Vermont.

D.  Contact your local Center For independent living (CIL) and ask for a housing  councilor or recommendations for a HomeShare.  Click here to find your CIL.

My goal is to help you restore your peace of mind about where you live and the house you live in... and isn't that something we all deserve?
