Dear Brian,

I am so happy to know you are giving this seminar right now because I have pressing questions.  I am on Social Security Disability and SSI and have been in the recovery movement for some years.  Although my physical health is not improving, I have a much better handle on how to manage my disabilities and am being productive and creative.  I have taken a course at UCLA in writing grant proposals and I passed!  We are waiting for results on my first proposal for a local drop in center for the homeless.  It is voluntary so I don't have to worry yet about money.

I have just finished an art project that could bring in quite a bit of income if published in the right way.  I met a woman at church who raises money with fundraising events and publicity who says she will help me raise the money to publish it.

My first question is:  What are the rules about receiving grant money or charity to pay for a project?  I think the rules are that I can't put it in the bank account and am wondering if I can legally get someone (a relative for instance) to hold it in trust for me to pay for further projects.  If it is several thousand dollars, what do I have to do to keep my Social Security?

Secondly, when royalties come in from the sales of the project, what should I do with the money?  Can I re-invest it to sell more of the art, or publish a book, or do I have to give half of it up?

The third question pertains to becoming financially self supporting again, which I hope to do if my health allows it.  I would like to create a non profit organization and raise funds to make an eco-friendly mini farm, possibly a cooperative or maybe just a rental property, with two fourplexes on it so I can live off the rental incomes.  I am confident I can handle that with the help of friends, advocates, a groundskeeper-handyperson and an assistant/caretaker who can stand in for and look after me when I am not able to work.  I have a mentor who has agreed to help me raise the money for that project  when I incorporate and create a viable business plan and I have gathered most of the information I need to do that.  I still have a few classes ahead of me but it's in the works.  Again, I am wondering what the rules are for raising those funds -- for instance, if the money comes in batches instead of all at once will I be jeapardizing my Social Security?

Fourth, when I am able to support myself will I have to pay Social Security or Medicaid back?

Finally, when I pass on, can I give the property to worthy friends and associates instead of having it confiscated by Social Security?  I want to create a viable little well-being community that lasts longer than I do.

I know the Social Security people will try to help if the rules allow it because they want us to become self sufficient if we can.  But there must be a safe way to do the fundraising.  Can you please talk about it and perhaps tell me where I can get ongoing personal business and/or legal coaching to see me through the process without violating the law?

3. Where to find Grant money for my book (Brett)
Dear Brian,

I cannot sit-in for your webinar on Wednesday, but I do have a question for you.  I have been trying to get some information for government grants that I could apply for towards starting my business, write my novel, and just money to pay bills, but there are membership fees for all the websites that are quite steep.  I went to the library recently to gather more information about grants, but most of their information consisted of Foundation scholarships for student still in high school.  Do you know of any sites or places that I could use as a resource to apply for grants from the government?  If you do, please let me know as soon as you can.

I found your interview to be very helpful, and it made me feel quite excited when I utilized the methods she reccomended to do some research.
